  • Preface

From the original days of manned or unmanned flight, theindividuals and their processes to repair, modify, maintain, andservice the vehicles that were used to rise above the ground havelargely been unsung. This book is about the processes and thesystems that they developed and used to ensure, on an ongoingbasis, the quality, viability, and safety of the men and machinescommitted to flight.

This book could not have been written without the dedicatedsupport of all the technical individuals from Trans Canada Airlines(currently Air Canada), USAir (currently US Airways), all thosecompanies who are members of the Air Transport Association ofAmerica (ATA), the International Air Transport Association (IATA),the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), and manyothers who provided guidance, support, and knowledge to me over thelast 50 years. I am also grateful to Jon Lynn and Nancy Govan-Aubinfor their substantive efforts in creating the illustrations for thetext.

You will be taken from the earliest days and principles ofaircraft maintenance to the high-level technologies currently inplace to ensure the ongoing safety and reliability of airplanes inour commercial air transport system.

It is also appropriate, having recently celebrated the 100thanniversary of manned powered flight, that acknowledgment is madeto the Wright brothers for their unique achievement because theywere dedicated maintainers of their aircraft.
